What is an NVQ?
NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification. It is a modern qualification that is industry specific, unlike GCSEs and 'A' levels, so they are directly geared to a particular career or industry.

How is an NVQ achieved?
An NVQ is achieved in the workplace and they are based mainly on practical tasks, not on theoretical examinations. The candidate is assessed on their ability to perform work related tasks effectively to the standards laid down and approved by commerce and industry. NVQs are awarded by nationally recognised bodies such as City & Guilds, BTEC & EMTA. All learners must cover a range of Key Skills which include Communication, Application of Number & Information Technology. From September 2001 learners will have to take a written Key Skills examination as part of their apprenticeship.
To achieve an NVQ a candidate produces a portfolio of work, highlighting the skills learned and how they are put into practice in the work place. Help and guidance is ongoing from Horizon Training.
Examples of evidence for a portfolio are:
1. Written records of tasks completed.
2. Proof of tasks completed (copies of company job cards or job sheets).
3. Workplace observations by the NVQ assessor.
4. Peer reports from senior staff, any other evidence you feel is relevant.
The work is continually examined by our approved NVQ assessors and verifiers. Upon completion, their portfolio is externally verified by the awarding body and a certificate awarded.
